Ky-Laag is a pure demon, who leaves devastation in it's wake. Summoned by Roman general Scipio to cast out the demon cult, the Blood of Carthage, from Rome, Ky-Laag ultimately betrayed Scipio and the Romans. Developing the proper magic to trap Ky-Laag, the Blood of Carthage managed to buriy it beneath the African sands. In time, they worried that the demon might be discovered, so they moved Ky-Laag to a wild, undiscovered continent, and buried him on its farthest shore -- Sunnydale. Through magic and fear, the Blood of Carthage turned General Scipio into a hideous thing and made him the sentinel to watch over the burial site. Every ten years, Scipio would be allowed to forage for sustenance, feeding on fear once a decade.
Buried beneath the rock of the local quarry in Sunnydale, Ky-Laag was trapped for centuries, weakened yet filled with hate. To conserve its strength, it would sleep for ten years at a stretch, waking each decade to call out to anyone who listened and attuned. Whispering into dark souls and weak minds, Ky-Laag searched for anything to set it free.
In the 21st century, Scipio was finally killed by Buffy the Vampire Slayer, upsetting the binding spell that held Ky-Laag trapped, allowing it to be free to bring devastation to the town of Sunnydale. Not able to be sent home, nor destroyed, Ky-Laag's reign of terror forced Buffy and the Scoobies to become uneasy allies with the few remaining members of the once proud Blood of Carthage in order to trap Ky-Laag beneath the quarry again. Heading downtown to where the beast was terrorizing the locals, Buffy and co. gave it their all to slow Ky-Laag down. While Buffy distracted Ky-Laag from harming to any more people, the Scoobies recreated the spell the Blood of Carthage had once used to trap the beast. With Ky-Laag beneath the Quarry again, the Blood of Carthage left Sunnydale, assigning Buffy the task of watching over him to ensure he would never emerge again.
