HISTORY

During the beginning of Buffy's freshmen year at UC Sunnydale, a series of bizarre killings took place on the campus, where several female students were killed in a gruesome fashion, with massive internal damage. Human-size insects were impregnating the women on the campus with their offspring. Buffy got involved when the bugmen launched an attack at an anti-rape rally she was attending with Willow. The bugmen kidnapped Willow and attempted to impregnate her, but Buffy stopped them in time. After killing the bugmen, Buffy noticed a small device lying near one of them and destroyed it, which shattered the balance of the Hive, which caused the bugs to swarm.

Several months later during a massive heat wave, the bugmen resurfaced. Coming out of the woodwork, the insects began to swarm the town, attacking any human in sight. The first reported casualty was when Cole -- an ex-Initiative soldier and friend of Buffy's boyfriend -- patrolled a ghost alley, and was attacked by the bugmen, who overwhelmed him with brute force. Attaching a device onto Cole's back, the bugmen infected him with a bug virus that transformed Cole into an insect drone of the Hive.

The bugmen also paid a 'visit' to Sunnydale's own renowned entomologist, Dr. Warren Whitcomb to assist in their plans of conquering the surface world. The Hive's plan were interrupted again, when Buffy and the Scoobies tracked down their lair by following Cole through Sunnydale's sewer system to where the Hive was located.

Entering the main womb of the Hive, Buffy slayed the Queen and her drones with help from Willow and Tara, who had created a magical insecticide. Buffy shattered the balance of the Hive permanently by destroying the Hive's power chamber.
