EXCLUSIVE: Scrapped Buffy Comic Storyline
During Scott Lobdell and Fabian Nicieza's run on the original Buffy comic series, one of their storylines was axed by Joss Whedon because it was too similar to Season Seven of the show. We caught up with Scott Lobdell to find out about the axed story..
"Essentially, I pitched the one thing you could do in a comic that you couldn't do in the show -- have the Hellmouth swallow Sunnydale! Since that was the whole crux of the lead up of Season 7 -- my original story had to be nipped. No harm, no foul! As it is, it all worked out in the end! The Buffy Inside the Asylum story -- the one that filled in the gaps of that classic episode -- was one of the funnest books I've written in the last five years!"
If given another round at the Buffy comic, Lobdell said that he has "always wanted to do an Initiative series. I love, love, love the idea behind Riley and the Initiative! If Buffy was Bogart the reluctant freedom fighter in Casablanca, than Riley had the potential to be James Bond on a world stage!" |

Joss discusses his heavy

In
a different interview with VH1,
Joss Whedon explained his reason
for bring Buffy back from the
dead:
"I
was trying to put together TV
movies and different venues to use
characters I loved writing and
then the comic thing happened
almost accidentally. Dark Horse
was interested in reviving the
comic, and I started thinking
about it. I had sort of lost my
other avenues of storytelling. I
thought, "There's no reason why I
can't continue the story here."
And then my brain exploded. I
started having all these ideas
and grand plans and no free time
whatsoever. The show was very
mundane, deliberately mundane.
There were many things we
couldn't afford to do, but there
were also certain things we
wouldn't do, whereas a comic has
got to work on a grander scale.
We really can take the characters
wherever we want -- and of course
that means I can kill them." |
