Near the end of the No Man's Land saga, the Joker decided to kill all the children born during this period. Quinn dressed up as the Joker, to throw Batman off the Joker's trail, leaving Sarah Essen, Commissioner Gordon's wife, to confront the real Joker alone in Gordon's police headquarters. During the encounter, Essen saved a baby from a dangerous drop to a hard floor, but was shot and killed by the Joker. Gordon restrained himself from killing the Joker, opting only to shoot out his knee.
