Season
Six

Aud, a simple housewife living in a small
Scandinavian village in 880 A.D., attracted the
attention of the demon D'Hoffryn when she casted a
vengeance spell on her unfaithful lover, and was
offered the chance to ascend into a patron saint
for scorned women. Aud was renamed Anyanka and was
given a a silver necklace with the power to grant
scorned women their fondest wishes.
For a thousand years, she wielded the power of the
wish. She brought ruin upon the heads of unfaithful
men, offering destruction and chaos for the
pleasure of the lower beings, while being feared
and worshipped across the mortal globe. For a short
while, she also worked alongside with a lovelorn
demon named Veeya, and handled the vengeance while
Veeya dealt out grief and sadness to their victims.

Eventually, the two demons went their separate ways
and in 1998, Anyanka met a grisly end. She was
drawn to Sunnydale by the despair of Cordelia
Chase, to grant her wish taking on the guide of
student Anya Christina Emmanuella Jenkins. The
repercussions of Cordelia's wish created a grim
alternate reality where Anya's necklace and power
center was broken, undoing Cordelia's wish and
making Anya mortal again.

Having
to learn how to deal with being human again, Anya
became distracted and disturbed by the relationship
between females and males. Anya found herself drawn
to Xander, and quickly became involved with him.
Though her age and experience as a demon give her a
very strange perspective on almost everything --
and her former demon status sometimes complicated
their relationship -- the couple became boyfriend
and girlfriend. (BtVs:
Blood of Carthage)
Anya became accepted as a full-fledged member of
the Scooby gang, but Willow, Xander's lifelong best
friend, never adjusted to Anya dating Xander. For
almost two years, Willow kept her feelings against
Anya to herself until demon manifestations of
jealousy were released, which caused everyone's
true feelings to come out. By this time, Anya was a
cashier at The Magic Box, the meeting place for the
Scooby Gang. Anya also held bitter feelings against
Willow that she kept bottled up. Anytime Willow
wanted a magical talisman or potion from the store
to practice spells with, she took it without paying
because Giles, the owner of the store, did not mind
and felt it was okay if it helped Willow further
increase her abilities in the magic field. Anya, on
the other hand, minded a great deal and felt that
Willow was stealing from the shop. During a heated
argument between Anya and Willow, regarding
Willow's stealing and Anya's relationship with
Xander, the bottles containing the demon
manifestations of jealousy were accidentally
shattered by Willow. Once released, the demons took
over the minds of Willow and Anya, and manipulated
their anger, so that they would try and kill each
other. Buffy managed to save the day, and Anya and
Willow buried their hatchet.

After Buffy died in an apocalyptic battle, the
remaining Scoobies grew closer and 187 days later,
Willow used her powers to resurrect Buffy. Shortly
before Buffy had died, Xander finally proposed to
Anya, who happily accepted, but when Buffy died,
Xander declined to mention their engagement to
everyone else. (BtVs:
Death of Buffy)

The couple finally announced their wedding plans
after Buffy was brought back, but on her wedding
day, disaster struck. Xander got cold feet and left
Anya at the alter. Hurt and angry, Anya became a
vengeance demon again. She later reconciled with
Xander when the Hellmouth swallowed Sunnydale, and
the population had become prisoners, but Anya
decided that she had been too dependent on others
and resolved to find a purpose in life without
Xander. During a final battle to close the
Hellmouth, Anya was brutally slain.
